Head:

Professor Cyrus Izadi Yazdi

  • The Department of Psychiatry offers a wide spectrum of innovative in- and outpatient services, from addiction and substance abuse programs to senior care to psychiatric emergency services. We have developed a culture of shared expectations regarding integrity, accountability and decisiveness in commitment to excellence. Moreover, we exercise compassion and respect in our patient interactions and encourage diversity in people, ideas and mental health solutions.

Mission
  • The Department  at the Comprehensive Neuropsychiatric Center is committed to the tripartite mission of providing the highest level of care to patients, conducting innovative research, and educating the future leaders in the field. Psychiatric and behavioral health disorders range from potentially life-threatening disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression, as well as less debilitating but common conditions, such as anxiety and less severe mood disorders. These conditions take a toll not only on sufferers themselves, but also on families, caregivers, and society as a whole. Prevention, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of these conditions are central to comprehensive health care. The Department of Psychiatry strive to provide the highest level of clinical care to all patients, create new knowledge and translate these discoveries from bench to bedside, and educate the future generations who will carry on this work. The Department is involved at all levels in carrying this mission into the larger world community. The Department takes seriously its role as a spokesperson for the profession and in publicizing the importance of behavioral health and  well-being. As important, the Department maintains active, leading programs in focusing on depression, schizophrenia, alcohol and drug additions, tobacco use, obesity eating disorders, national security and bio terrorism, and patient advocacy, among others.

The Department of Neurophysiology/EEG at Prof.Izadi’s Comprehensive NeuroPsychiatric Center offers a wide array of Electroneurodiagnostic tests, which study and record the electrical activity in the brain and nervous system. These types of tests are performed by technologists who record information on paper or computer, and the results are interpreted by Professor Izadi.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain. Highly sensitive monitoring equipment records the activity through electrodes that are placed at measured intervals on a patient's scalp.

EEGs assist physicians in the diagnosis of a variety of neurological problems, from common headaches and dizziness to seizure disorders, strokes, and degenerative brain disease. The EEG is also used to look for organic causes of psychiatric symptoms and disabilities in children, and can assist physicians in determining irreversible brain death.

For the patient, the test is not painful. The head is measured and the electrodes are placed on the scalp with a paste-like substance. The test itself usually takes about 90 minutes, and the principal role of the patient is simply to remain still, relaxed and comfortable. During the test, the patient may be asked to take repeated deep breaths and may be shown a strobe light that flashes at different speeds. Both activities can help reveal different brain patterns that are useful for diagnosis. Sometimes, physicians also want to observe brain patterns that occur during sleep. For sleep tests, the patient may be asked to stay awake most of the night prior to the EEG appointment or in some cases may be given a mild sedative.

  Department of NeuroPsychology

Head:

Saied Malihialzackerini (PhD.S)

Personality and Clinical Health NeuroPsychologist

The Department of Neuropsychology is a full service neuropsychology practice located in Tehran City, Iran

We specialize in the evaluation , diagnosis  , intervention, and rehabilitation for children, adolescent, and adult neurological problems that affect cognition , emotion and behavior.

Neuropsychology deals with either known or suspected brain disorders, and how they affect a person’s thinking and behavior. Most neuropsychologists specialize in performing in-depth evaluations of cognitive functions (such as memory, attention, and organization), emotional health, and behavior to arrive at the correct diagnosis, and making corresponding recommendations. Since they are not physicians, neuropsychologists cannot prescribe medications, but they will work closely with your physician(s).

In the case of children, a clinical neuropsychologist may perform an evaluation to determine whether the child has attentional problems (such as ADHD), a learning disability (such as problems with reading or dyslexia), or an Autism Spectrum Disorder (such as Asperger’s Syndrome). Some children may have traumatic brain injuries or other known medical problems (such as cancer) that affect behavior, and the purpose of the evaluation is to determine their strengths and weaknesses, and to make school / learning recommendations.

The first step in helping a struggling child is to provide an accurate assessment of the problem. In some cases, this may involve providing a behavioral diagnosis such as dyslexia, ADHD, or Asperger’s Syndrome. There are many reasons why children struggle at school or at home, and not in all cases does it result in a diagnosis. our philosophy is that correctly identifying behavioral problems in childhood is of ultimate importance, and that accurate diagnosis comes from gathering as much information as possible from the referred child (including testing), and from parents, teachers, and counselors.

Once the evaluation is completed, we will write a report detailing the findings and recommendations. The child’s parents, sometimes accompanied by the child, return for a follow-up visit to review the results and develop the best plan of action to help the child.

In the case of adults, a neuropsychologist may evaluate an individual who is experiencing problems with memory, language, organization, and/or other mental abilities. For mature adults, if there are questions about cognitive dysfunction, a neuropsychological evaluation is essential to differentiate conditions such as dementia, depression, or normal age-related cognitive changes. In the case of younger and middle-aged adults, there may be a known neurological disorder, such as a traumatic brain injury or Multiple Sclerosis, and questions arise about educational or work planning

As it relates to mature adults, we examine young and middle age adults for memory and other cognitive problems, as well as personality ,emotional and behavioral changes. In some cases, these individuals already have been diagnosed with a neurologic condition (such as Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, or Parkinson’s Disease), or a more general medical diagnosis (such as cancer or sleep apnea). Other patients are referred without a medical diagnosis, but they have concerns about their memory. Depending on the patient’s age, the focus of recommendations may be educational or vocational in nature.

We  perform competency evaluations in cases of developmental disability, traumatic brain injuries, dementias, or any other neurologic condition that may affect decision-making capacity. It may be important for family members, physicians, and attorneys to know whether or not a person has the ability to make competent decisions in regards to medical, legal, and financial matters

Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention. It is like using a magnifying glass to focus the rays of the sun and make them more powerful. Similarly, when our minds are concentrated and focused, we are able to use our minds more powerfully. Because hypnosis allows people to use more of their potential, learning self-hypnosis is the ultimate act of self-control.

Everyone has experienced a trance many times, but we don’t usually call it hypnosis. All of us have been so absorbed in thought –while reading a book, or riding the bus to work– that we fail to notice what is happening around us. While we were zoned out, another level of consciousness, which we refer to as our unconscious mind, took over. These are very focused states of attention similar to hypnosis.

Clinical hypnotists do essentially three things with hypnosis. They encourage the use of imagination. Mental imagery is very powerful, especially in a focused state of attention. The mind seems capable of using imagery, even if it is only symbolic, to assist us in bringing about the things we are imagining. For example, a patient with ulcerative colitis may be asked to imagine what her distressed colon looks like. If she imagines it as being like a tunnel, with very red, inflamed walls that are rough in texture, the patient may be encouraged in hypnosis (and in self-hypnosis) to imagine this image changing to a healthy one.

Another basic hypnotic method is to present ideas or suggestions to the patient. In a state of concentrated attention, ideas and suggestions that are compatible with what the patient wants seem to have a more powerful impact on the mind.

Finally, hypnosis may be used for unconscious exploration, to better understand underlying motivations or identify whether past events or experiences are associated with causing a problem. Hypnosis avoids the critical censor of the conscious mind, which often defeats what we know to be in our best interests.

Courses in Hypnotherapy / Hypnosis:

We make every effort to hold workshops in all regions of the IR.IRAN.

Basic level instruction provides individuals with an opportunity to develop clinical hypnosis skills that are directly applicable to their clinical practice.

Intermediate level instruction allows individuals the opportunity to refine their clinical hypnosis skills.

Advanced level workshops are topical. Recent workshops have focused on behavioral medicine, health psychology, hypnosis and pediatrics, and mind-body medicine.

Participants are encouraged to attend these workshops in sequence in order to make the most of each workshop. Skills mastered in the basic and intermediate levels are essential to fully benefiting from the advanced level workshops.

Department of Occupational Therapy

Psychiatric Occupational Therapy

Psychiatric OT bases its treatment on the secondary psychiatric diagnosis, and not the initial medical diagnosis. Thus, Physical Rehabilitative OT might treat hemiplegia S/P CVA, and Psychiatric OT would treat related depression or adjustment disorder. Diagnostically based documentation is essential, not only for the patient’s care, but for reimbursement.

Psychiatric diagnoses commonly treated by the Psychiatric OT are:

  • Depression

  • Atypical depression

  •  Dissociative Disorder

  •  Conversion reaction

  •  Adjustment disorder

  • Atypical psychosis

  •  Schizophrenia

  • Early onset dementia

  • Borderline personality disorder

  • Obsessive compulsive disorder

  • Panic disorder/anxiety

Treatment is usually provided at the patient’s bedside or in a group therapy setting. Psychiatric OT works closely with other departments of the center to maintain excellent, prompt communication related to patient care. A unified approach is also created whenever possible, by also liaising with Social Services, Nutrition Therapy and Pastoral Care. The MD Consult Team from Psychiatry also refers patients to Psychiatric OT. Likewise, if a patient is identified as having either a psychiatric history, or a new onset of symptoms, Psychiatric OT will encourage the attending physician to refer the patient to the Psychiatric Consult MD Team for diagnostic evaluation, counseling and psychopharmacological treatment.

Department of Psychometric

Head:

Fatemeh Sadat Akbarian(PhD.S)

Psychologist

The Psychometrics Department at the Centre is an high qualified centre of excellence in psychological, occupational, clinical and educational assessment.

'Psychometrics' often implies psychometric testing, but also provides scientific principles for fair, accurate examination systems, for clinical diagnosis and for recruitment techniques such as interviews and assessment centres.  These underlie crucial decisions in education, human resources, health provision and psychological treatment.

Our centre exists because:

  • assessment demands high standards from educationists, business managers, policy makers, clinicians, researchers and psychologists;
  • bad assessment damages individuals, organizations and the credibility of academic work;
  • globalization and new technology are creating new assessment needs.

Psychometric testing is today experiencing a period of explosive growth in new theoretical approaches, analytical techniques and areas of application. Psychometricians work in health care and biomedical research where they investigate diagnostic testing procedures, particularly for psychiatric or borderline conditions but also for physical illness ; in human resources and talent management departments and in test publishers, where they devise ability tests and personality questionnaires for fair and accurate assessment of staff for recruitment, career guidance, coaching, staff development and team building; in education, where they work in special needs identification and in designing, evaluating and improving examination systems; in security, where they innovate with character profiling approaches that have come to form an important part of forensic science and fraud detection; and in epidemiology, where they analyze datasets from large scale government.

We  have a comprehensive batteries of clinical ,  personality , cognitive – Intellectual and neuropsychological   tests. So our consultancy work is in four main areas:

  • Design and development of psychological tests
  • Evaluation of individual tests and selection systems - e.g., for adverse impact , book proposals, etc.
  • Training professionals and practitioners in psychometrics, statistics, and individual differences
  • Writing distance-learning materials

In addition, we  are experienced in numerical analysis and programming experiments in human experimental psychology and multivariate statistical routines as our research involves developing and implementing novel methods of multivariate analysis (particularly factor analysis).

Do please contact us if you need a well-qualified consultant with a sound practical appreciation of mental measurement and a keen interest in applying these principles to real-life problems.
